Incredible summary written by "Akino Ame"...Thank you!!
Images prepared by me (Julie).
(Note: I know that this hasn’t been dubbed, but I’m going to use the dub names anyway. Also, I’m not sure whether her name is supposed to be Dalkmon or D’Arcmon in the dub, so I’m going to use the second because of the fact that the character is named after Jeanne d’Arc [Joan of Arc]. And please excuse me for my references to Zoids: Chaotic Century, but I found them to be very similar).
We see a long stretch of desert laced by a train track. A female voice hums some traditional Italian song as we go along. Soon, we see a dinky Trailmon (Trailmon Bola according to Yami no Tooshi) carting around five kids and two Digimon. How on Earth they all managed to fit is anybody’s guess.
Zoe’s sitting on Bola’s head (pretty dumb for someone in a skirt if you ask me), humming said Italian song. Takuya and Koji are sitting in the back, pouting. Apparently, they’ve just had another of their fights. Well, they’re traveling along happily (minus Goggle Head and Wolf Boy) when all of a sudden, some shadowy Digimon a la “His Master’s Voice” start fighting a war around them. And above them, a giant Miyazaki-esque island in the sky is breaking free of its chains, crashing down toward them. Bola is derailed, causing the kids and Digimon to go flying back into the island, where our story begins. *Insert InuYasha-type music here*
Takuya wakes up to see a little Rookie Digimon in front of him, asking if he’s okay. He sees that J.P. and Tommy are okay, though J.P. is embarrassing them by calling out Zoe’s name. Takuya and Tommy then introduce themselves to the Rookie and the Baby Digimon around them. This Rookie turns out to be Kotemon, the little brother of a commander of the Human-type Digimon. Bokomon and Neemon then point out a mural on the cliff nearby: AncientGreymon, the original Spirit of Flame, and AncientGarurumon, the original Spirit of Light. In between them is a birdlike Digimon called Ornithmon. Just then, several Beast-type Digimon come busting into town, chased by tanks filled with Human-types. The Beast-types start slaughtering Human-type soldiers, and Kotemon’s big brother, Dinohumon, the “Captain Hermann” of the Human-types, won’t stand for it. Tommy clutches a digiegg close to him (much like 01 T.K.) as Hippogryphmon, the leader of the Beast-types, appears. (I know that at this part, you don’t get a very good look, but he honestly looks like a Digimon version of Gunther Prozen) Dinohumon and his team, swearing revenge, run after him, but his leader, D’Arcmon, stops him in an alley. She values her soldiers too much to let them go running off into what is probably a trap. But they don’t care and run off anyway to see to it that the Beast-types pay.
Meanwhile, in the country of the Beast-types, Koji and Zoe are welcomed as honored guests of Grizzmon, the “Colonel Shubaltz” of these soldiers. His little brother, Bearmon (I know I promised to use the dub names, but someone at Bandai screwed up and had two characters named Kumamon. How am I supposed to keep myself straight?) is seeing to it that the two Digis are taken care of by giving them plenty of food. While Zoe’s stuffing her face like she’s never seen food before, Koji just stares off into space behind him, asking Bearmon what those tanks are in the distance. Just as the Rookie is about to tell them, Dinohumon and Yashamon (NOT “InuYashamon!” He’s actually more of Captain O’Connell) start slaughtering Beast-types in retribution. Grizzmon warns Bearmon and the humans to stay in the house while he orders someone to go find Hippogryphmon. They will not let these Human-types get away with this.
All right, is anyone noticing a pattern here? “We kill you, you kill us.”
They fight until Hippogryphmon shows up, crying tears of passion for those who gave their lives. All the while, the three inside watch the spectacle, and Koji and Zoe develop some hard feelings toward the Human-types.
Kotemon leads Takuya, J.P., Tommy, and several Baby Digimon across a river, but they all fall into it. All at once, they start sneezing. (Actually, unless that river was filled with more germs than the Centers for Disease Control, there’s no way for them to have gotten sick like that) There’s really no point to this scene, other than it’s incredibly cute and explains why Takuya keeps sneezing the whole movie.
The five Legendary Warriors reunite…somewhere…and start arguing over who the real enemy is. Takuya, J.P., and Tommy swear it’s the Beast-types while Koji and Zoe argue that the Human-types killed without reason. Of course, you know where this is headed. Koji and Takuya unsurprisingly get in another fight, throwing each other around while Zoe and J.P. yell at each other. Tommy just kinda stands there… It’s at that point that the biological warfare begins and Takuya nearly sneezes on Koji, who calls him an idiot. Guess I gotta agree with that logic. Anyone who sneezes on me would be called a baka as well. But Kotemon and Bearmon start crying, as do all the Babies. They don’t agree with the fighting, especially considering that as a Human-type and a Beast-type, they are forbidden to become friends. They ask for a truce, and Takuya and Koji agree only for the Digimon’s sake. However, Takuya did seem to win the fight when he finally did sneeze on his former friend. Bearmon and Kotemon offer to take them someplace cool, which catches the attention of all of them.
They go to a dark cavern with a painting of three Digimon seen before. Bearmon blows on a couple of stones, and they start to glow. He presses them against the wall with the painting, and the picture of Ornithmon is lit up. Bokomon starts reading the ancient words on the stone wall, and Takuya and Koji ask for a translation before remembering just how much they hate each other and glare at each other before turning the other way like Tai and Matt.
At this part, I forget the translation I read, so I’ll have to summarize the way any non-Japanese speaker would: Bokomon says something and everyone looks about as confused as me. There’s something about DejiCodo (DigiCode—Fractal Code in the dub). The kids leave to the setting sun, and then the trouble starts. A large butcher knife hits the ground in front of them. They look up to see Dinohumon, Yashamon, and some other guy—probably a FlaWizardmon. Yashamon practically threatens Bearmon for being there and throws him. Zoe yells at him, and he’s about to attack her when Bearmon comes in with a couple of his Beast-type buddies. A fight ensues, of course. Bearmon asks them to stop, but they don’t listen. Finally, unable to take anymore, Takuya and Koji take charge.
Takuya: “Execute Spirit Evolution! Agunimon!” (Japanese: “Supiritto Evolution! Agnimon!”)
Koji: “Execute Beast Spirit Evolution! KendoGarurumon!” (Japanese: “Supiritto Evolution! Garmmon!”)
Their entrance is far from spectacular. They only ram the leaders into the walls in trying to stop them. Grizzmon then tells Bearmon to come home, and Dinohumon does the same for Kotemon while the disappointed Legendary Warriors look on. When they’re gone, Tommy notices something strange about the glowing rock he’s holding. There are words on it.
Okay, if this didn’t look like Chaotic Century before, it’s really starting too. In the city of the Human-types (which looks so much like New Helic City it’s scary), D’Arcmon is urging them on. It looks exactly like the parade in which Van saved an Imperial soldier. Takuya and J.P. are feeling kind of iffy about the whole war going on. Dinohumon then approaches them, asking for Takuya’s help seeing as he’s the one inheriting AncientGreymon’s power. Takuya’s about to refuse when he sees Tommy assisting Kotemon and the Babies out of the window, down a clothesline, and to the cavern. He pretends to agree, and leads Dinohumon away from the conspiracy while J.P. heads off to warn the other two.
At that time, the same thing is going on in the country of the Beast-types. Koji’s watching the whole thing halfheartedly from Bearmon and Grizzmon’s. Hippogryphmon urges the Beast-types not to give up, blah-blah-blah, and then Grizzmon asks for Koji’s assistance, knowing that Garmmon will be a great addition to their team. He states that he doesn’t want to have anything to do with the war (now it’s Chaotic Century!), but fakes an agreement when he sees J.P. underneath the house’s stilts. Zoe’s shocked, and Grizzmon…hugs Koji? Okay… But Koji manages to get out a subtle hint to Zoe that everything’s going to be all right before Grizzmon drags him off, still apparently hugging him. Zoe’s still confused on it until J.P. comes up.
The two Rookies have never been so happy to see each other, and Tommy puts everyone to work right away on rebuilding the wall while Koji and Takuya philosophize about the war with the two commanders. The battle begins, and they refuse to fight, but eventually things get to be too much. They can see their armies mercilessly killing the other’s and the other’s mercilessly killing theirs. There are no good guys in this, they realize, and they both pull out their digivices as they yell for it to stop. What appears to be a charged particle blast (no, I’m not kidding!) detonates, and the two evolve.
Takuya: “Execute Beast Spirit Evolution! BurningGreymon!” (Japanese: “Supiritto Evolution! Vritramon!”)
Koji: “Execute Spirit Evolution! Lobomon!” (Japanese: “Supiritto Evolution! Wolfmon!”)
The commanders are shocked to see this and basically declare the boys as traitors. They are now free targets to anyone, but they don’t care. They still try and stop the fight while Dinohumon starts shouting for D’Arcmon in all the confusion. D’Arcmon looks at BurningGreymon taking apart her cannon and orders her forces to charge. But at the same time, Grizzmon is calling for Hippogryphmon. D’Arcmon has that frustrated “God, just shut up!” face on. Hmm, wonder what her problem is.
The wall is finally finished, and Bokomon reads off the cryptic language and discovers that Ornithmon was actually an evil Digimon sealed away by the two Ancients. Neemon says something stupid but useful for once, and everyone gets worried. But J.P. points out an egg-shaped hole in the wall, and Kotemon recognizes it as the pendent on D’Arcmon’s scepter thing. But wait! Bearmon recognizes it as the charm on Hippogryphmon’s necklace. How could two completely different Digimon have the same little egg-shaped thing? Suspicious, J.P. and Zoe head out to warn the other two while Tommy stays behind. Before they can even get out of the door, they see D’Arcmon slide evolve into Hippogryphmon! *Insert shocked gasp here!* So while BurningGreymon and Lobomon are trying to stop the tanks, J.P. and Zoe take matters into their own hands and evolve to break up the fight, never mind the fact that if nobody other than Koji and Takuya have their Beast Spirits, she shouldn’t be able to.
Zoe: “Execute Spirit Evolution! Kazemon!” (Japanese: “Supiritto Evolution! Fairymon!”)
J.P.: “Execute Spirit Evolution! Beetlemon!” (Japanese: “Supiritto Evolution! Blitzmon!” No, this is not another Zoids reference!)
Using his Thunder Fist, Beetlemon manages to grab everyone’s attention before he and Kazemon explain the connection between the two leaders. Naturally, both the armies are appalled, but Hippogryphmon doesn’t care.
Hippogryphmon: “Hippogryphmon slide evolution! D’Arcmon!”
Now, the commanders are in even more shock than before. This whole time, they had been fighting for nothing? But D’Arcmon uses her scepter to drain the Fractal Code from the digieggs in order to resurrect Ornithmon. She then explains that AncientGreymon and AncientGarurumon sealed away Ornithmon with the egg-thing long ago, and that in her true form, she stole it in order to destroy the world, I suppose. Man, these kids never get a break from these kind of villains, do they? Whatever happened to the villains like the Digimon Emperor who just wanted to take over the world, not destroy it? Grizzmon and Dinohumon vow revenge on her for making them kill endlessly, but it’s too late. The big bird with an annoying squawk has resurrected.
Inside the cavern, the walls start coming down, so it’s up to little Tommy to save the day again.
Tommy: “Execute Spirit Evolution! Kumamon!” (Japanese: “Supiritto Evolution! Chakmon!”)
He uses his Crystal Freeze or Breeze or whatever it’s called to blow away rocks from falling on the other Digimon. He then reunites with the others to fight Ornithmon. D’Arcmon evolves into Murmuxmon (who is another male Digimon. What, is she the biggest cross-dresser since Kamatari in Rurouni Kenshin?) and jumps on his back. Interesting fact: Murmuxmon’s voice sounds very much like Beelzemon’s in the dub. Cool.
After seeing that the Digis’ attacks are pretty useless against either Murmuxmon or Ornithmon, Kotemon starts running toward the mural of AncientGreymon and AncientGarurumon, hoping for help. Bearmon tells him that it’s useless apparently, but Kotemon refuses. His determination and tears cause the paintings to glow. He looks up in surprise, only to realize that Murmuxmon and his pet bird are right behind him, threatening to destroy the mural. He runs into the line of fire, screaming “Stop it!” at the top of his lungs (and yes, this is in English). His body falls to the ground and becomes a digiegg. His voice is heard saying, “Bokutachi wa minna tomodachi” (I think it means “We are all friends,” according to my dictionary program). Though the Legendary Warriors, Grizzmon, and Dinohumon are all saddened by his loss, no one is more devastated than Bearmon. He screams out Kotemon’s name one last time, and the digiegg manages to awaken the two Ancients with a ping sound. The Babies actually have to bring poor Bearmon over to see the two, and he screams some kind of battle cry or something.
Ornithmon attacks the two Ancients, but the Legendary Warriors and the tanks won’t let that happen. BurningGreymon returns to Agunimon while the tanks pelt Ornithmon with cannonballs, and uses his Pyro Tornado to destroy Murmuxmon before calling out the names of the two Ancients. They awaken fully, and join our heroes in battle. AncientGarurumon throws his blades into Ornithmon’s wings, and AncientGreymon breathes a fireball into him, destroying the pain in the butt once and for all. Then, just like that, they disappear.
Grizzmon and Dinohumon thank the kids for all their work, but Takuya insists it was the Ancients who really saved the day (and in true hero fashion, got their butts out of there when they were done). Bokomon and Neemon appear flying in on a pink umbrella, saying something that really doesn’t matter if you can’t find the translation or speak Japanese because they’re still annoying, and something about it gets the kids and Bearmon laughing. Takuya does a narration in the end, and Zoe comments that he has a cold. Of course, he sneezes again.
The ending credits roll with Kouji Wada’s “Fire” in the background. We see the Baby Digimon and some others (my file is really crappy, so I can’t tell) swimming in the water, and then what appears to be a Season One-esque group portrait of everyone, with Baby Digimon and digieggs scattered everywhere. Bearmon is in the middle, Takuya to his left, and Bokomon to his right. Behind them are Zoe, Grizzmon, and Dinohumon. To Takuya’s right is Tommy, and to Bokomon’s left is Neemon. J.P. is either next to or behind Tommy, and Koji’s off to the side. But as the camera pans out, we see that it isn’t just a group picture, but a mural placed in between those of the Ancients. Bearmon is standing in front of it, and he turns to smile at the camera. We then see a reborn Kotemon standing outside, wiping his nose and then waving to Bearmon before he runs out past a mural of himself crying over his friend’s sacrifice. But as he passes it, the painting changes to one of him and Kotemon hugging, with the Babies around them.
